Cross Country Walks

Silves to Messines (31.5 km / 19.6 miles – 8/9 hours – Full Day)


Want to escape to the country & lakes come try this guided walk!

This walk is Moderate to a challenging walk, we will start the walk in the Old capital of the Algarve with views of the Castel (Silves), as we walk through the narrow streets of the town, you will see the different Architecture of the old buildings. Then heading out of the town east onto dirt tracks. We will be walking our way through the Hills, alongside streams / forests with panoramic views.

There are many parts that are uphill, but we will do this at a relaxed pace stopping for breaks and to take in the landscape, great photo ops, before coming down towards the Barragem (lake / Dam) to have a lunch break and rest.

Continuing along the lake the second half of the walk is easier on mostly flat ground, we will guide you around the Barragem (lake/ Dam) which with every turn you will find fantastic views, water on one side and fields and trees on the other. At the end of the lake we continue through the countryside with many wild flowers, trees and birds to photography before heading towards & into another old typical Portuguese village (S.B.Messines) to finish the walk.


Silves to Barragem do Funcho (15.5 km / 9.6 miles – 4+ hours – Half Day)

Barragem do Funcho to Messines (16 km / 9.9 miles – 4+ hours – Half Day)

This is a moderate to easy walk as we are walking on mostly flat ground, we will guide you around the Barragem (lake/ Dam) which with every turn you will find fantastic views, water on one side and fields and trees on the other. At the end of the lake we continue through the countryside with many wild flowers, trees and birds to photography before heading towards & into another old typical Portuguese village (S.B.Messines) to finish the walk.


Alte to Portela (12km / 7.4 miles – 3 hours – Half Day)


Want to escape to the country come try our typical village & cross country guided walk!

This is a Easy to moderate walk first through what is considered the most typical Algarvian village (Alte) where there are regional shops selling homemade cakes, teas, honey etc.. Following on small roads, quickly exiting onto dirt tracks.

Discover the old walking ways from the past; cross country down small lanes past old buildings, orange fields going further off the beaten track. One minute walking down a winding beautiful valley with various Berry bushes and trees to look at and photograph, a short walk and it opens up onto panoramic mountain / cross country views back towards Vilamoura / Albufeira and the coastline.

Getting to higher ground to rest enjoy the clean country air looking at the amazing views. We then walk through a few hamlets, past wind turbines towards Portela de Messines.


Alte to S.B. Messines (20km / 12.4 miles – 7 hours – Full Day)

This is a moderate to challenging walk first through what is considered the most typical Algarvian village (Alte) where there are regional shops selling homemade cakes, teas, honey. Then following on small roads, quickly exiting onto dirt tracks.

Discover the old walking ways from the past; cross country down small lanes past old buildings, orange fields going further off the beaten track. One minute walking down a winding beautiful valley with various Berry bushes and trees to look at and photograph, a short walk and it opens up onto panoramic mountain / cross country views back towards Vilamoura / Albufeira and the coastline.

Getting to higher ground to rest enjoy the clean country air looking at the amazing views. We then continue on along dirt track roads up and down hills past ECO Wind Turbines, Olive & Citrus groves, through Hamlets passing the outer edges of a main town before continuing cross country.

We will now take you through Ruins where Remexido a notorious bandit of the Algarve took refuge, with extensive Almond orchards around. On the way look out for Bee hives and many different plants and trees. This route takes us over typical red limestone walkways “Grés-de-Silves” and across streams.

Along this narrow route there will be many opportunities to stop and take photos and observe the birds and plant life.

We finish this walk by coming into a typical Old Portuguese town of S.B.Messines.


Portela to Messines (9km / 5.5 miles – 3 hours – Half Day)


Come and enjoy country and river side walking with this guided tour.

This is a moderate walk that covers some uneven terrain and steep walkways at times. We start by passing through a small village, and extensive Almond & Citrus orchards before arriving in the area of Ruins where Remexido a notorious bandit of the Algarve took refuge.

On the way look out for Bee hives and many different plants and trees. This route takes us over typical red limestone walkways “Grés-de-Silves”. We will lead you down across and alongside streams, soon after walking up hill for beautiful panoramic views.

Along this narrow route there will be many opportunities to stop and take photos and observe the birds and plant life.

We finish this walk by coming into a typical Old Portuguese town of S.B.Messines.


Salir to Alte (20km / 12.4 miles – 7 hours – Full Day)


Come and enjoy country walk with this guided tour.
This is an moderate to hard walk mostly on flat terrain with some steep walkways up hills which we will do at a relaxed pace.

First we will show you around a typical Algarvian village with ruins of a Castle (Salir), then out of the town area away from cars passing by old stone walls enclosing kitchen gardens and rural houses. Take in the aroma of the eucalyptus trees and other large trees that are either side of the walkways, following on where you will have the opportunity to photograph old water-wheels, cultivated land with Citrus trees, Peppers and the like being grown.

During this walk we will guide you through hamlets with beautiful flowers to see, old ruins and small farms. Taking you off the regular roads onto flat dirt tracks through the fields with high ground all around you – amazing views! While walking - listen out for all the birds and take in the country air.
Towards the end section of the walk there is the only uphill walk which we will take at a relaxed pace, stopping taking photos of the typical Algarve “Medronho” berries which you can eat, and smelling the lavender at the sides of the walkway. There are panoramic views looking back where you have just walked!

We will then arrive for a short break in a small beautiful village of Benafim, where you can see the traditional architecture, with the narrow streets, white houses and beautiful chimneys. We will then walk out of the village into the countryside onto dirt tracks.

Along this walk down the hill you will see orchards of orange and lemon trees as well as many wine vineyards. At the bottom you will find a stream of water that depending on the time of the year it can have more or less strength. This is the first indication that Alte is not too far. Along the way up the steep hill you can look through the valleys back towards Salir and onwards towards Alte – some amazing views.

If you are lucky a Fox or some lovely birds can come your way.


Salir to Benafim (13km / 8 miles – 4/5 hours – Full Day)
